Unlike Brexit, Halloween is finally upon us.

Will you be one of the millions that don a costume to display your most scary self? Will that costume include a set of prosthetic blood stained teeth? I’m hoping many of our patients will be wearing their Invisalign aligners instead (remember, 22 hours a day)!!!

It’s all well wearing a sinister smile for effect for one night, but if you are not happy with the shape or alignment of your teeth all year round, this could cause a lot of avoidable embarrassment and self-limitation.

We have helped countless patients find the smile they want with dental cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening, Invisalign, composite bonding and dental veneers. It’s why we do what we do! Treating dental disease and spreading the word of good oral hygiene may make us feel like super heroes, but giving a person the smile of their dreams gives us fairy godparent status! We want people attending our dental clinic in Fulham Road to leave being the best versions of themselves!

On the one day of the year where everyone is after a scream or a scare, at Chelsea and Fulham Dentist, we are after a Halloween howl of laughter and smiles.

To help, here are 10 reasons you may not have thought about to smile.

  • Smiling makes us more attractive

Who wouldn’t want to look and feel better about themselves? People are drawn by, and naturally attracted to, smiles. If you more confident in how your smile appears, you are more likely to smile, ergo you are perceived to be more attractive. If you are unhappy with your smile and tend to grimace/frown to avoid showing your teeth, you actually have the opposite effect and push people away.

  • Smiling relieves stress

Studies have shown time over that the act of smiling, regardless of how genuine it is, can reduce stress. If you are feeling the pressure, just remember to smile!

  • Smiling elevates our mood

The act of smiling activates neural messages to your brain that can trigger the release of mood-boosting neurotransmitters (like dopamine and serotonin). The act of smiling is effectively a natural form of anti-depressant

  • Smiling is contagious

Here comes the science bit: the part of your brain responsible for smiles is an unconscious automatic response area. Genuine smiles are unconscious, as are our mimicking habits, so smiling is effectively “contagious”.

  • Smiling boosts our immune system

It’s not quite the replacement of the flu jab, but it is thought that smiling helps the immune function as you are more relaxed. So, laughter can often be the best medicine!

  • Smiling lowers blood pressure

This is one you can try at home if you have a blood pressure monitor. Take a reading then wait a few minutes and take a second reading whilst smiling – scientists have shown that the act of smiling can reduce the reading – just fabulous!

  • Smiling makes us feel good

This comes back to the clever little neurotransmitters that are released on smiling, natures natural pain killers and anti-depressants.

  • Smiling makes us look younger

The elevator muscles used in smiling help to lift the face and can give a person a more youthful appearance. If you need a little more help then nature can provide, you can always see Dr Alexandra for some additional non-surgical procedures.

  • Smiling makes you seem successful

People who smile more regularly appear more confident. Confidence in this life is everything if you want to succeed!

  • Smiling helps you stay positive

Try this test: Smile. Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. It’s hard, isn’t it? Even when a smile feels unnatural or forced, it still sends the brain, and ultimately the rest of our body, the message that “Life is Good!” Stay away from depression, stress, and worry by smiling.
