Have you tried every lotion, potion and tonic on the market to reverse the signs of ageing?
You aren’t alone!
Many people have tried to minimise wrinkles and fine lines to no avail with even the most expensive skin creams. But now, there is a non-invasive way to reverse the appearance of wrinkles; dermal fillers!
Our team at Chelsea and Fulham are fully trained to administer dermal fillers, and our dentist Chelsea will be more than happy to meet with you to discuss this procedure with you.
But you may have some questions about it, and here, our dentist Chelsea answers common queries that we receive.
What are the different types of fillers?
There are a few different types of dermal fillers, but some of the most commonly used types are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. These are the most popular types of dermal fillers and include brands such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero. These are composed of a naturally occurring substance in the body and are used to add volume and hydration to the skin.
Next are calcium hydroxylapatite fillers, such as Radiesse, that are made from a substance that is similar to the minerals found in our bones and teeth. They are used to add volume and structure to the face and can also be used to treat deep wrinkles and lines.
At our surgery, our dentist Chelsea uses HA fillers.
What are the potential side effects and risks of dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are generally considered gentle and risk-free, but like any medical procedure, there are potential side effects associated with their use. These can include bruising, swelling, redness, or pain at the injection site. There can also be nodules or lumps under the skin, which may be visible or palpable. Much rarer is an infection or abscess formation at the injection site.
Migration of the filler material to unintended areas can also happen, but this is more common if you apply pressure to the area where the fillers have been injected.
How long do dermal filler results last?
The duration of dermal filler results can vary depending on the type of filler used, the area of the face treated, and the individual’s skin and metabolism.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero, typically last between 6 and 12 months.
Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) fillers typically last between 12 and 18 months.
Also, it would be best if you avoided smoking or drinking alcohol, as these can shorten the lifespan of dermal fillers. But you can have fillers reapplied twice a year if needed.
Are there any specific dermal fillers that are best for certain areas of the face?
Yes, different types of dermal fillers are better suited for different areas of the face.
For the lips, HA fillers are more commonly used. If you want to fill your tear troughs, we may also use HA fillers. If you want to have fillers in your cheeks, HA fillers such as Juvederm Voluma XC and Sculptra may be used to add volume and definition to the cheeks and restore a youthful contour to the face.
What is the recovery time after getting dermal fillers?
The swelling around the injection site should begin to recede after around 48 hours, and the bruising should also disappear about 5 days after the treatment.
If you feel that the recovery is taking longer than predicted, please call our team.
