My best friend of over 20 years came to visit the practice recently. I think she has amazing teeth but she was looking for, in her own words, a ‘Hollywood Smile’. She even sent me pictures of beautiful, straight, brilliant white teeth on WhatsApp before her appointment, similar to how I show screen shots to my hairdresser whenever I’m wanting a new hairdo!
My friend was a little disappointed with what I had to say. She knows we are an award-winning team, and we provide a wide range of services from Invisalign to teeth whitening, teeth straightening, dental implants and everything in between, even an increasing amount of Botulinum toxin and fillers! What we can’t and won’t be able to provide is an instant smile when more complicated work is required.
To meet my friend’s requests, she needed conventional orthodontics (fixed braces) with a specialist and she specifically wanted the brace fitted on the inside of her teeth (lingual braces) so they would not show…..
I was more than happy to organise this for her, and we had a good conversation regarding expectations, risks and benefits and likely costs of the treatment. It was all going swimmingly well until I mentioned that treatment would realistically take 9-12 months.
Apparently 9-12 months of wearing a brace was simply unacceptable. “But what about all these one visit makeovers I see on Instagram”, she wept. “What about all these things they promise you can get online, they all sound amazing, 9-12 months doesn’t….. I don’t mind paying more….”
Social media is an amazing tool, in this day and age, especially for patient education and awareness. However, it’s always important to understand that when it comes to smile makeovers, it’s not a one size fits all approach. It just can’t be!
We all have different sized, shaped and coloured teeth, that sit in our unique jaws, that then function in their own way within our faces. No 2 unrelated faces are the exact same.
